van Royen Apartment
This apartment for the art dealer Hester
van Royen was completed five years after
an earlier apartment at Elvaston Place.
The layout is articulated around an open
space of hall, corridor and kitchen,
the polished black floor appearing to flow
like water throughout. The two main living
areas are designed as separate territories,
linked by a pair of openings. The depth
of the intervening wall is expressed in
marble and in the hollowed square of the
fireplace, as well being physically
experienced as one passes between
the spaces.
