John Pawson Collection

This collection of wool and hemp rugs for Elte draws deeply for its inspiration on the architect’s own home in the Oxfordshire countryside — from the warm tone of its stone, to the geometries of its timbers and brickwork. At the heart of the wool designs are the twin notions of randomness and ordered grids, with the hand-knotting producing raised visual fields whose subtle animation is generated by small variations and irregularities. The character of the hemp pieces, by contrast, is defined by a series of fine lines carved into the surface of the hand-worked pile.
