John Pawson

Conceived as a family of generous,
modular, adaptable forms, the Drift Sofa
Group purposefully draws on the heritage
of Herman Miller and of American
Modernism. At the heart of the design is a
series of defining dialogues: between hard
and soft, straight and curved, right angle
and arc, light and shadow. An expression
of the architectural language of the shadow
gap, each timber frame sits on a smaller
base, creating the impression of floating
mass. In conjunction with the quality of
natural order inherent in the composition
of timber and upholstered elements,
the impact — on body and mind — is a
sensation of immediate and profound calm.
