White on white

In place of the term minimalism, the American artist Donald Judd preferred to speak of the simple expression of complex thought. The seamless expression of complex thought might be an equally apposite phrase. Where the emphasis in architecture falls on the quality of space rather than forms, issues of junction assume heightened significance. The challenge lies in bringing together mass, proportion and light in the most harmonious ways possible. On site in Wales, where work on the Life House is in its closing stages, a defining set of junctions is emerging, between brick and timber elements. The refined dialogue of tone, pattern and texture already has a profound impact on the atmosphere of the place.
