Twenty years on
With work now under way on the barn in Gloucestershire, it feels an apt moment to look back on another project involving agricultural structures, which finished two decades ago this year — Tilty Barn in Essex. As in Gloucestershire, the design had to address questions of how to live in an idiosyncratic accretion of structures whose original purpose has passed. There has to be a degree of simplification and there are things that must be done to make the spaces comfortable by contemporary standards, but you want to achieve this without losing what is visually, spatially and atmospherically exhilarating about the places in the condition in which they were first viewed.
