When the mist washes through Venice, the edges of things blur and dissolve. The shimmering quality of the sunshine, reflecting off the water, has a similar effect. When the light is flat however, the surfaces, colours and textures of the buildings acquire extraordinary clarity, filling the visual field with an exhilarating sharpness of detail.
