Cities are defined by their landmark buildings, but one’s experience of walking around is also characterised by the smaller details of the grain of the streetscape, in particular by the way the architectural fabric — here of Milan — is read as a composite of successive patches, insertions and interventions, overlaid by the new growth of plants and the constantly changing play of light and shadow.
