Seasons and cycles

The weekend’s seasonal transition from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time serves as a reminder of the many rhythms that underpin the passage of each year. It also brings to mind the repeating cycle of the Divine Offices, unfailingly unfolding at the abbeys of Nový Dvůr, Sept-Fons and Pannonhalma, as the communities gather in their respective churches and disperse again, at fixed points in every twenty-four hour period. These photographs show the regular transformation of the church at Nový Dvůr, from the prevailing darkness of Matins, celebrated at 3:15am, to the shifting play of direct and indirect light that accompanies services between sunrise and sunset.
