Reviewing work in progress at Benchmark in Berkshire, with Atelier Areti

The work of Gwendolyn and Guillane Kershbaumer was introduced to the office by Terence Conran and the sisters have since been designing a series of objects, hand-crafted in wood, that will be exhibited in the V&A in September, as part of this year’s London Design Festival. Rather than a specific item of furniture for a specific project, the starting point for the commission was the idea of exploring the surfaces and objects you touch and use everyday, each action representing a moment in the life of a room — switching on a light, opening a door, hanging a shirt on a hook, taking a book down from a shelf. Some of these are very small physical elements in themselves, but they come together to make the atmosphere of a space.
