Louis Kahn’s ‘façade to the sky’
Each successive exhibition at the Design Museum represents a fresh chance to reflect on how its new permanent home in Kensington will work when the building opens in 2016. Installation of the current Louis Kahn show coincided with an opportunity to visit Kahn’s Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. Set on cliffs overlooking the Pacific, the form of the space follows a suggestion made by the Mexican architect, Luis Barragán, when he visited the site:
‘If you make this a plaza, you will gain a façade — a façade to the sky’.
