John Pawson

In these photographs of one of the
sequence of three Cycladic villas designed
by John Pawson on the Greek island of
Paros, the eye is ineluctably drawn both
to the points of similarity and to the points
of difference. From the high point of the
approaching track, the orthogonal volumes
of the house sit in explicit counterpoint
to the softly irregular landforms rising
from the Aegean. The crisp geometry of
a wall manifests kinship with the sharply
descending diagonal of the nearby
headland, while contrasting with the
wavering character of the adjacent
shoreline and the mirror-smooth plane
of the pool invites comparison with the
