Abstraction in Meran
One of the consequences of making architectural mass is the way this mass forms frames and contexts for other entities — for views, for patterns of light and shadow and for the superimposition of slighter arrangements of mass. High above a valley in the South Tyrol, work on a private commission is entering its final stages. The composition is purposefully elemental. The rock of the mountainside itself is the dominant voice. It speaks of scale and a lack of compromise, but also of shelter and unexpected intimacy.
