‘A stone is ingrained with geological and historical memories’ Andy Goldsworthy
Stone’s character is bound up in its fixedness. At the same time details of form, function and context can charge its hard solidity with the energy of dynamic forces. Here a helical column appears to be drilling down into the ground and the stepped detail underscoring the line of a bridge parapet carries a powerful idea of movement, while the precise arrangement of blocks composing an arch serves both to resist and to recall the pull of gravity.
