Pattern in Merano

Pattern falls into a number of categories. Some are produced by nature, others by conscious human design. There are also forms of manmade pattern where the visual richness is the incidental outcome of functionally motivated moves — the sinuous green parallels of a terraced vineyard, a stack of cut logs, a pathway laid with stones set in mortar, the pixelated plane of tiles on a church roof and the dense array of goods on a market stall. In each of these framed views the degree of order fluctuates, with rogue elements and minor variations setting up interesting counter rhythms.
