Lines and curves in Miami Beach

The art deco style, for which Miami Beach is known, is characterised by a particular and graphic conjunction of the straight line and the curve. But the relationship between the grid and the arc also plays out in broader sense in the city’s streets, buildings and gardens. In this context, the branches emerging from the clipped plane of a hedge seem indicative — three rising lines that are simultaneously straining for the vertical and being pulled into something more sinuous and organic.
