‘Beauteous the garden’s umbrage mild/ Walk, water, mediated wild…’ Christopher Smart

Ten years ago today, a ceremony marked the completion of the project to create a bridge across the lake in the heart of Kew’s historic gardens. The passing of a decade has bound the Sackler Crossing deeply into the physical and psychological landscape of the place, but even a decade ago, the process of naturalisation was already advancing, as was evidenced by the patinating bronze balusters and a nest woven by a pair of opportune moorhens between the struts of the steel superstructure.
